In your letter to the Attorney General you state that in April of 1985 the previous fiscal court voted to lower the magistrates' salaries from $1500 to $1000 per month. In January of 1986 the new fiscal court voted to raise the salaries back to $1500 per month. You ask whether this is legal.

LLM Summary
In OAG 86-69, the Attorney General addressed an inquiry regarding the legality of the fiscal court's decision to adjust the salaries of magistrates. The decision confirms that adjusting the salaries during a term of office is permissible under the law, provided it does not exceed the maximum compensation allowable for that year, which is determined by the Department for Local Government.
